Baker to Vegas; A Ham Radio Perspective
Have you ever wanted to know what it takes to run this event? Have you wanted
to know more about this event other than what you do for the race? Are you
looking for more information on the race before you commit to helping with the
race? In this presentation you will find answers to questions that we have been
asked about the race over the years. You will also hear from people that come
back to work the race year after year.
This presentation was first given at the Southwest Division ARRL Convention in
Riverside, California September 10, 2005. This was the first time that all of
this information was presented together giving the overall race its much over
due acknowledgement for its volunteers.
The race was started over 20 years ago and is run in a relay format by teams of
Law Enforcement Officers from throughout the world. The course starts in Baker,
California and runs through the desert into Las Vegas, Nevada. It is 120 miles
long but for communications we cover an area of over 8100 square miles.
The focus of the presentation is the skill and dedication of the volunteer ham
radio operators and the people who help them to provide a seamless
communications network to provide for the health and safety of all the people
who come out to work, see, or support the race.
Race communications is covered from all aspects. From the overall communications
needs and equipment needed to support the entire race and exchange points to the
equipment and support needed to provide the information to the individual teams
for their internal support.
